Child of Tolui and the Kerait princess Sorghaghtani Beki, he was a grandson of Genghis Khan and sibling of Ariq Boke, Mongke Khan, and Kublai Khan. Hulagu's armed force enormously extended the southwestern part of the Mongol Empire, establishing the Ilkhanate of Persia, a forerunner to the possible Safavid tradition, and after that the cutting edge state of Iran.
